In 2021, one of his feature scripts was shortlisted at the Whistler Film Festival Screenwriter’s Lab. Synopsis
A poet's muse calls on his inner child to save their relationship.
Director Statement
With figurative language being one of its essential elements, poetry at its best can stimulate the reader to develop new ways of perceiving oneself and reality. As an admirer and pupil of the creative process, I've come to hypothesize that the choice or ability to see life in a poetic way aligns with a reconnection to one's origins: a return to a child’s point-of-view, or the adoption of a "beginner's mindset".
How is such a reconnection possible, if at all?
I have found that external circumstances, including trauma, can often force a person to harden their defenses and suppress their childlike sensibilities. Some people see this process as developing strength in a hostile world. However, I believe that our separation from childhood innocence – the simple and truthful way of life that we all started from – is the cause of our internal brokenness. Without realizing what we have turned our backs on, this brokenness deepens our pain and divides us further from others. True healing, I feel, comes from finding peace within. Where do we start, though, when the pain inside becomes overwhelming? "Pieces Within" takes the perspective of an interpersonal mirror: when we come into close contact with another person, it illuminates us to our own inner lives. With emotional honesty and openness, we may be able to help each other find strength to heal from within, perhaps giving birth to something new.
